The guards are made from alloy, most likely aluminum based, and while the cross guard still has most of the plating, the pommel guard has lost almost all of it, now showing a polished aluminum color. The tang nut looks to be made from plated non magnetic alloy, and is in great shape, with excellent plating and no signs of
